Inspiration behind pet food coach

Pet food Coach was inspired by our pup, Betsy.  We, Lynn and Curt Millington, adopted her from a rescue center when she was 10 months old.   We struggled for years with various brands of commercial dog feed that never helped Betsy achieve optimum health.  Betsy “coached” us in this regard by refusing to eat or by experiencing ongoing gastric distress. We found the process of trying to find an appropriate dog feed frustrating and were distressed by the lack of intelligence surrounding the process.  We would go to an upscale “boutique” dog store or a vet and get frustrating recommendations like, “Oh, this brand didn’t work? Try this other one.” It became stressful that each brand we tried seemed to yield the same bad results. It led us to think that Betsy must have lots of allergies or maybe a crazy autoimmune disorder.  Through this ordeal, we often found ourselves wishing we could speak with someone who formulated and made the food to try to get some answers.

When we were regularly switching food brands,  Betsy would often have an upset stomach, so we would put her on a limited ingredient ‘elimination’ diet. This was usually something like chicken and rice. Over time, we realized that she seemed to be in the best health during these in-between periods while eating a limited ingredient, whole food diet.

This realization led to research, consultation with veterinary nutritionists, and finally to the products and service offered here as we became convinced that a diet based on minimally processed, whole foods is the best way to feed any animal.

Once we simply started feeding our dog with real food we realized that she in fact did not have allergies or anything else wrong with her- she just needed some fresh real food to eat.

Meet Betsy

Betsy is THE COACH!  Not only is she the inspiration for our business, she is and has been a once in a lifetime kind of dog.  She is the kind of dog I always dreamed of having as a kid and I knew it the first time we met.

Betsy is a West Virginia Mountaineer, having been transferred to Baltimore from a dog pound somewhere in West Virginia.  We never found out why or how she ended up in the rescue system because for us, she has always been a fun, super well-behaved dog.

She is a Cattle Dog mixed with Corgi.  For years, she was the fastest dog in the park and an awesome frisbee dog!  She still loves to swim when we can find a friendly hole. She is now almost 14, but we are still hiking trails around Central Oregon and our hearts are full of glorious memories of all the miles of trails we have hiked and ran over the years.  Betsy has taught us a lot and we have had a lot of fun!

Meet Curt and Lynn

We are a story of opposites attracting, of yin and yang coming together with awesome harmony!  We are both animal lovers and lovers of the natural world.

We moved to Central Oregon from Baltimore with the plan to start our dog food business.  We heard of a place that self describes itself as the best place in the country to be a dog and thought “we have the right food for that pack!”

Lynn has a successful career in the commercial real estate industry.  She is steady and true, always keeping an eye toward the practical considerations.  Curt is more of a creative sort, having previously worked successfully as both a commercial photographer and a wine shop manager among other less glorious jobs.  He is unafraid of asking questions and stepping out of his comfort zone to try new things and experience new places. It’s a short life, you’ve got to step out!

Pet Food Coach has been largely Curt’s brainchild, with a lot of coaching from others along the way. Bringing Pet Food Coach to the market has been a journey with some hard lessons learned along the way.   With Pet Food Coach, we are proud to offer superior quality dog food and treats and provide superior service to go along with them.
